Admission Requirements

• Teachers who are already professionally qualified to teach may not offer this qualification.
• It is the responsibility of the student to consult with the relevant Education Department districts or Provincial Education Departments on how to upgrade to additional REQV (Registered Educator Qualification) levels.
• Outstanding admission requirements may NOT be offered for non-degree purposes (NDP).
• Students who do not meet all the admission requirements for this qualification should consider applying for a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree if they are not already professionally qualified.

General Rules

• UNISA reserves the right to cancel PGCE modules registered in excess of the allowed number.
• Students completing the PGCE over more than one year must register for Teaching Methodology in the same year as Teaching Practice.
• The maximum time allowed for completion of the PGCE qualification is three years.
• Some pre-requisites and/or co-requisites outlined may not apply as they do not form part of the curriculum.
• This qualification consists of 11 modules totaling 132 credits.
• Note that SPE1507 has been replaced by NSO1507, and students who have passed SPE1507 must NOT register for NSO1507.

Purpose Statement

The qualification serves as a professional 'capping' qualification for educators in schools. Its aims include:

• Developing and consolidating in an integrated manner appropriate disciplinary, pedagogical, practical, and situational knowledge.
• Cultivating practical understanding of teaching and learning in diverse South African schools, concerning educational theory, phase and subject specialization, practice, and policy.
• Fostering self-reflexivity and self-understanding among prospective teachers.
• Nurturing commitment to the ideals of the teaching profession and an understanding of teaching as a profession.
• Developing professional dispositions and self-identity of learners as teachers.
• Enabling learners to develop the dispositions of active citizenship in their learners.
• Promoting competencies to organize learning among a diverse range of learners in varied contexts.

This qualification will be presented using both online and distance learning modes.

Module Selection Guidelines

When selecting modules, it is important to note the following:

• Each Unisa qualification requires a certain number of NQF credits to be passed within a specified timeframe in order to graduate.
• Co-requisite: A module is a co-requisite if it must be taken alongside another module.
• Pre-requisite: A module is a pre-requisite if it must be passed before registering for a subsequent module.
• Students may not register for more than the maximum number of credits/modules allowed per year or semester: 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year.
